Upgrade from Win 8 Pro to Win 10 pro or home

I have a Dell Optiplex 9010 desktop that has Win 8 Pro.  I wish to move to Win 10, home version or higher.

Should I just reformat my HD and install 10 from a retail package, or is there an upgrade option that would be less expensive?  (I know I will also have to update chipset drivers for 10, etc.)

Or in the interim, can I upgrade to Win 8.1?  I see information about moving from Win 8 and RT to 8.1, but it is not clear if that is possible with the PRO version.  (I don’t need the PRO features).

Any advice would be much appreciated . .

Solution

The free upgrade to Windows 10 offer from Microsoft expired on the 29th July, 2016.

But Microsoft has a number of exceptions in place for users that missed out on the free upgrade and they have currently not stated any end date to these exceptions (except for one), but will adjust as necessary.

You will have to contact MS support and they should be able to assist you with a free upgrade to 10 Pro..

But first make sure that you have the correct system requirements and that your Computer Manufacturer supplies the correct Drivers for 10.
