Win 10 Anniversary Update hangs on a black screen with whirling dot circle

I’ve been running Win 10 for a year after a free upgrade from the Win 8 installed on a Dell Inspiron17 laptop. Tried to install the offered upgrade to the Anniversary Edition (1603) but at the last stage of the installation process the screen goes black and then displays only the whirling dots progress circle. No keyboard keys or mouse activity registers and the only way to get back into the machine appears to be to power down. On restart, a further black screen appears and the message "Attempting to complete installation" appears briefly before it reverts to black screen with whirling dots. Eventually, after several iterations , Windows reverts to Win 10 ver 1511 and I can once more use the machine. I have left the machine in black screen state overnight and it’s still doing the same in the morning. Can anyone help?

Hi Joanna,

Not sure if it is the same thread, but I saw yesterday a suggestion that has worked for me. Simply remove the Logitech wireless mouse USB transmitter from your PC. I know! Why should that make a difference? Anyway, I'm now going to try it on the second laptop in our house and see if the same thing works for that as well.

There was a similar thread before about this black screen with rotating dots in the community.

Also, I suggest you try this troubleshooting as well:
